Proper Hygiene for your Pup

As a Holistic Trainer all product that we recommend are clean products. Which also means they are a little bit most pricey but totally worth it. Dog hygiene is a proper balance. There are many horror stories of dogs having seizures or hot spots cause by certain product put your dogs fur. In this article we will cover Bathing, Flea and Tick remedies, and some amazing dog hygiene products that can make your life easier.

Shampoo:

The simplicity that makes Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Soap great for our bodies, also makes it great for dogs. You’ve got that blend of saponified plant-based oils—coconut, olive, palm, jojoba, and hemp seed—which is exceedingly nourishing as it cleans thoroughly. And then you’ve got all the benefits of the various essential oils. No junk. No fillers. No irritants or cloying artificial fragrances. Plus, true soaps like Castile Soap kill fleas and other insects. It won’t give long-term protection, but it does clean them up beautifully.

Dr. Bronners can be found in Target, Walmart, most of regular super stores.

Conditioner:

You should avoid using human conditioner on a dog, as it can be too heavy and irritate the skin. Dog conditioners are designed to be gentle on the skin and are usually much lighter than human conditioners.

What is the best dog conditioner for dry skin?

The best dog conditioner for dry skin will usually contain ingredients that are known to moisturize and nourish the skin. Some of these ingredients include shea butter, coconut oil, and argan oil.

Dog Baths

How often should I give my dog a bath? It's depending on breed, lifestyle and coat. Even veterinarians and experts disagree on how often you should bathe your pup but the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recommends a baseline of once every one-three months.

The most tried and true answer to this question is personal to your dog and their needs. Do they spend their days frolicking in the grass and playing in the mud? Are they prone to run-ins with skunks? Or are they lap dogs who would rather cozy up inside?

It’s also contingent on their hair length. According to BeChewy, medium and long coat dogs should bathe every four to six weeks, and owners of dogs with short coats should bathe their pets somewhere between every month and every three months.

Dog owners should be warned not to wash their pup’s coats too much, though. The American Kennel Club advises against over-bathing dogs with thick coats — think Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers or Siberian Huskies — because it can strip oil from the skin that aids with naturally insulating dogs.

For Bigger Dogs:

The Aquapaw features a unique two-in-one design that combines a sprayer and scrubber in a single device. It allows you to control the flow of water with one hand while using the other hand to massage and scrub your pet, providing a comfortable and stress-free bathing experience for your furry friend. Additionally, the Aquapaw is made of high-quality, durable materials and is easy to install and operate, making it a great gift for pet owners of all kinds.

I love all hand held shower attachments for washing dogs. There are many different variations some more powerful than others.

Ear Cleaning, Brushing teeth, Toe Nails

Your dog's ears are an essential part of their hygiene and health, but ear cleaning solutions are often overlooked. A great solution will help to flush out wax and also eliminate bacteria that could lead to clogs or ear infections.

My fav Ear wash solution is

Teeth

Puppies loose, and regrow teeth.

Oral hygiene is just as important for dogs as it is for humans. Poor oral hygiene can lead to serious life-threatening conditions including kidney, liver, and heart muscle damage. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 80 percent of dogs show signs of canine periodontal disease as early as age three.

Flossing toys

Flossing toys such as tugs or a wet and frozen wash cloth really help with the inflammation of gums.

Dog Nail trimming

There are several types of dog nail trimmers, including scissors, grinder tools specifically designed for dogs, and guillotine types. You can use whatever type you are most comfortable with, or whatever works best for your dog. It’s a good idea to have some styptic powder or other clotting powder on hand to stop bleeding in case you cut a nail too short.

Here are the steps to follow to properly trim your dog’s nails:

  1. Pick up a paw and firmly, but gently, place your thumb on the pad of a toe and your forefinger on the top of the toe on the skin above the nail. Make sure none of your dog’s fur is in the way.

  2. Push your thumb slightly up and backward on the pad, while pushing your forefinger forward. This extends the nail.

  3. Clip only the tip of the nail, straight across. Include the dewclaws, located on the inner side of the paw.

  4. Avoid clipping past the curve of the nail or you risk hitting what is called the quick (the pink area of the nail that contains the blood vessels). A nick there is painful and will bleed. For dogs with dark nails, watch for a chalky white ring.

The Wrap up

Each breed will require their own level of care. French Bull Dogs require high care and products. Where is an Australian shepherd is low care in comparison.

But each dog has their own individual needs.

Know your dog, pay attention to scratching & licking, weird odors, and alway seek professional veterinary help if you see any open wounds, or unusual behavior.
